Fitter - 1A

Job Description

We are looking for a Fitter - 1A to join Southwest Shipyard Lp. This role involves performing structural fitting functions to ensure the safe and efficient construction and repair of ships. As a Fitter - 1A, you will be responsible for laying out, positioning, aligning, and fitting together fabricated structural steel plates according to customer specifications and direction from Foreman/Supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Perform structural fitter assignments as assigned.
• Notify foreman or supervisor of any safety and/or structural issues as warranted.
• Consult with foreman or supervisor regarding installation or repair problems, sequence of operations, and time required to complete repair and/or installation.
• Attend safety meetings as required.
• Maintain a safe working environment.

Education, Experience and Training

• Minimum one year experience as a structural fitter (shipyard experience preferred, but not required).
• Be able to perform simple paperwork as required for filling out forms and logs.

Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Mandatory drug testing prior to employment, and will be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol tests during employment.
• Ability to communicate and take directions from Foreman & Supervisor.
• Good judgment skills, high-level work initiative, and ability to work independently without direct supervision.
• Must be able to meet strict attendance requirements.

Physical/Environmental Requirements

• Barge chemical environment, prolonged kneeling, standing, walking, twisting, climbing, and the ability to lift and carry in excess of 120 lbs, assisted.
• Ability to work in varied conditions (i.e.: heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, etc.), inside and outside.
• Able to work in confined spaces, heights, and operate equipment efficiently and safely.
